Lighting and illumination
Lighting means more than a concept; it contains the ideas of civilization and safety.
Civilization, explain please: man throughout history has always done all he could to find a solution to his problems and difficulties in order to improve his life and to face incidents and dangers in a more and more organized way.
Time and technological progress are man's natural evolutional processes, which brought undeniable advantages in mankind's lifestyle (even if not the whole world benefits from them, and even if some of these advantages have undesired consequences on environment and nature).
Light is a basic need in the entire mankind's timeline, a problem that has always been felt as primary - together with nourishment and food. Therefore many efforts since the discovery of fire have been spent in obtaining a light source to share and dispel fears and darkness.
Safety, explain please: light has always had a reassuring effect on human soul. Sunlight allows moving easily in the surrounding environment and lets the body synthesize vitamin D.
The discovery of fire has furthermore enhanced the safety levels: it helped to keep the wild animals away, dispels darkness at least in its immediate surroundings and as a really appreciable side effect it even cooks food.
Fewer bacteria, less natural enemies, less fear: fire and its consequent evolution through lighting in the millennia gave mankind unquestionable safety improvement.
We could talk about mystic, symbolic, religious meanings of light and lighting, but without stretching the topic too far we can summarize that desire and necessity of light are so deeply rooted in life itself, that you cannot set them aside in any corner of the world.
There are so many systems to produce light and light itself is part of mankind in all cultures, in which it plays a key role.
