Men have barely started standing in prehistory when they suddenly felt like sitting. The first men sat of course on the ground, or on the floor of caverns and dwellings.

After a while, some cleverer exponent of the species discovered that it is more comfortable to sit for example on an animal skin or on a hay heap instead than on the nude ground and had very little difficulties in convincing the rest of his fellows. We can say that was the very first day of a chair.
Of course years and ages refined the concept, sitting on the ground even on the most comfortable cushion had maybe turned out of fashion and briefly the hug of somebody holding you on his knees was abstracted in the project of the chair: a variable number of legs (not always four, sometimes one or two or three or even more) supporting a seat whose rear edge has a back, to lean on. The first construction stuff was of course wood and also non tanned leather.

The development and progress have brought much more materials, infinite shapes and styles, from modern, minimal stylish laser cut metal to antique-looking fine-fabric upholstered chair. Choosing a chair nowadays is more a spiritual exercise than a mere need. You need to plan your future days imagining yourself sitting on that set of chairs, imagining that very chair inserted in the room and you know it will last a lot of time, so you have to think. To better operate, the advice is always to have a look at the market's proposals, even if this could drive you mad for the infinitive possibilities to play with.
