Decorations and accessories: the carpets and rugs
Throughout history, the carpets have been considered very precious, since they were hand-knotted by legions of women and at times children (child slavism is not a new topic as you see) and passed on in their families as heritage or brought in dowry when married. The knotting of these pieces - of any size always took a long time, the thinner the fibers the longer the manufacture.
Many of these carpets, masterpieces of agelong handicraft, have decorated dwellings of various dimensions and typology.
For example some have been hanging from the walls of castles and palaces, maybe picturing hunting scenes, while other covered the floors. Nomad camps in the Near and Far East have always ad and still have one or more carpets as floor covering, in the West in the homes of the rich the finely worked rugs and carpets have always been an element of distinction and elegance.
Interesting details: all carpets coming from Persia (today Iran) or from other Islamic countries are decorated with flowers, leaves, scrolling vines and geometrical patterns (often including Koran verses) without animal or human figures, because the religion prohibits their depiction. Another curiosity is that all carpets present a slight defect, which is made on purpose because only God can create perfection and humans are not perfect.
In the current era, the expensive hand-woven carpets are prerogative of a happy few and are however very indicated in those classic-to-traditional environments more than in the modernly or minimally decorated homes. The hand-knotted production of carpets is still alive and widespread, as the hand-woven carpets are considered of superior quality. Materials are wool or cotton and at times silk.
The carpet is still a complement that determines the style and the character of a room, and the industrial era entered the carpet world to create some beautiful objects with the help of the modern machinery, saving time (a hand-woven carpet even if quite little takes a lot of time to be finished) and therefore saving also money, with the possibility of reinterpreting such a traditional piece in the highlight of modern patterns, colors and materials.
